Bretania, Franța – A doua parte

Și am ajuns în paradis. Localizat chiar la granița dintre Normandia și Bretania, dar mai mult în Bretania :), castelul-hotel al cărui nume este Château du Bois Guy datează din secolul al 16 lea și a fost transformat cu mult bun gust într-un hotel de 4 stele cu restaurant propriu, săli de nunți, de conferințe și de fitness, teren de golf și alte anexe minunate. Am scris recent un articol dedicat lui, pe care îl puteți găsi AICI. Ne-am petrecut întreaga după-amiază aici, am luat cina în restaurantul hotelului și apoi ne-am bucurat de un pahar de vin și o vorba pe terasă după ce a adormit Mara.

EN: And so we arrived in paradise. Situated just at the border between Normandy and Brittany, but more in the Brittany side of France :), the castle-hotel named Château du Bois Guy dates from the 16th century and has been tastefully transformed into a 4 star hotel with its own restaurant, wedding rooms, conferences and fitness, golf course and other wonderful annexes. I recently wrote an article about it, which is available HERE (soon in EN version also). We gladly spent the entire afternoon in the hotel, dined in the hotel’s restaurant, and then happily enjoyed a glass of wine and a chat on the terrace after Mara fell asleep.

A cincea zi /5th day

Fougères

Vă spuneam în articolul precedent că micul dejun l-am luat la hotel. Am “inhățat” câteva reviste din recepție și ne-am adăpostit în cameră pentru a decide itinerariul zilei. Ne-a cam dat bătăi de cap vremea în a cincea zi de vacanță, vântul nu a contenit să bată, iar ploaia măruntă nu s-a gândit să ne cruțe. Așa că după micul dejun ne-am îndreptat către Fougères, primul orășel de lângă Parigne, situat și el în regiunea Bretania. În 2013 Tour de France, startul cursei renumite de biciclete a Franței s-a dat chiar din Fougères. Cool stuff right? Un orășel cochet, liniștit, care adăpostește un castel, monument istoric, cum rar vezi. Château de Fougeres este unul dintre cele mai mari (dacă nu chiar cel mai mare) de acest gen din Europa, fiind întins pe o suprafață de 2 hectare. Plimbarea printre zidurile castelului îți taie respirația, tocmai pentru că nu te aștepți să găsești un castel medieval atât de mare aici.

EN: I was telling you in my previous article that we had breakfast at the hotel. We grabbed some of the magazines available at the reception and went in our lovely room in order to decide about the itinerary of the day. The weather was kind of bad on the fifth day of our vacation, especially because of the wind which didn’t stop blowing. Even the rain was merciless. So after breakfast we decided to head to Fougères, the first small town near Parigne, also located in the Brittany region. In 2013, France’s famous bike race Tour de France has actually started in Fougères. Cool stuff right? A beautiful, quiet town that houses a wonderful castle, a historical monument you can rarely have the chance to see. Château de Fougeres is one of the largest (if not the largest) of its kind in Europe and is spread over 2 hectares. I must admit that walking through the walls of the castle is breathtaking, especially because you would never expect to find such a medieval castle here.

După o mică plimbare în zona cetății și mai apoi prin târgul organizat sâmbăta în centrul orașului – o piață ambulantă cu multe bunătăți – ne-am bucurat de un ceai servit la Salon de Thé – Bar “l’Audace” și ulterior de un prânz cu clătite (gallette și crepes) la Creperie du Theatre. Bunicele clătitele, însă nu suntem, și nici nu am devenit între timp fani. Uimitor e cum ei țin la asta și chiar se bucură de prânzurile sau chiar cinele compuse doar din clătitele franceze renumite. Și nu neapărat pentru că e “low cost dish” ci pentru că ei chiar apreciază felul acesta de mâncare. Prețurile unei clătite variază in funcție de ingrediente, pot spune că prețul însă nu dictează calitatea. Cele pentru care am plătit “doar” 7 EUR nu sunt cu nimic mai prejos decât cele care au costat 18 EUR/porția. Alăturate cidrului ele fac parte evident din folclorul Bretaniei, aceste “Breton Crepes”(clătite dulci) și “Galettes” (clătite sărate din făină de hrișcă) reprezentând și astăzi un important aspect social al gastronomiei franceze.

EN: After a short but lovely walk in the area of the fortress and then around the fair taking place on Saturdays in the city center – an ambulatory market with many goodies – we enjoyed a hot tea served at Salon de Thé – Bar “l’Audace” and then a lunch with the famous pancakes (gallette and crepes) at Creperie du Theater. The pancakes were tasty, but I wouldn’t say we became fans of the respectable dish. It’s amazing how the locals praise it, and even enjoy lunches or dinners completely made up of the famous French pancakes. And not necessarily because it’s a “low cost dish” but because they really appreciate it. The prices of a pancake vary depending on the ingredients, but it seems that the price does not dictate the actual quality of the product. Those who cost “only” 7 EUR are no lower in quality or taste than those that cost 18 EUR / portion. Closely linked to the cider, both products are part of the Brittany’s folklore, these “Breton Crepes” and “Galettes” (salted pancakes from buckwheat flour) still representing an important social aspect of the French cuisine.

Britany American Cemetery and Memorial

Ne-am întors la mașină pentru a ne continua drumul către Mont Saint-Michel, cireașa de pe “clătită” a zilei. Și pentru că Mara a adormit pe drum, am profitat de ocazie și am vizitat rapid, pe rând, Brittany American Cemetery Memorial, un loc impresionant și tare emoționant. Următoarea oprire, din nou pe rând, a fost la magazinul Saint James din incinta fabricii care funcționează chiar în orășelul Saint James, unul dintre mărcile de îmbrăcăminte cu renume în întreaga lume. Fabrică este construită pe o fosta pistă americană pentru avioanele militare :D. Dacă intrați pe site-ul lor veți vedea acele “nautical sweaters and breton striped shirts” adică acele dungi clasice “breton” sau franceze , tricourile cu dungi din jerseu ce au fost introduse ca uniformă oficială a Marinei Franceze in anul 1858. Mai multe detalii despre istoria și secretele din spatele mărcii sau a fabricii puteți găsi AICI, sunt foarte multe informații interesante strecurate printre rânduri. Prețurile sunt destul de ridicate însă calitatea hainelor si a accesoriilor este chiar una pe măsură.

EN: We returned to the car and continued our journey to Mont Saint-Michel, the long awaited cherry on the “pancake”. Mara fell asleep on the road so we took the opportunity and quickly visited the Brittany American Cemetery Memorial, an emotional and exciting place to see. The next stop we took advantage of was (again, one by one since Mara was still sleeping) at the Saint James store and factory located in the town of Saint James, one of the most popular clothing brands available across the world. The factory was built on a former US military aircraft track, with US flags waving all around the parking spots. The shop offers a great experience for the visitors, especially due to the well-trained shop assistants. They do have a special way of presenting those authentic nautical sweaters and Breton striped shirts that have been introduced as the official uniform of the French Navy in 1858. The product prices are quite high, but the quality of the clothes and the accessories is indeed notable.

Mont Saint-Michel

Înainte de a pleca în vacanță așteptam cu maximă nerăbdare să ajungem la Disneyland, la Château de Bois Guy și Mont Saint – Michel. Cele 3 destinații de top să zic așa. Așa că una dintre atracțiile principale ale topului urmă să fie savurată în curând. Yeyyy!!! Verificasem pe Google cam care sunt orele aglomerate în Mont Saint-Michel tocmai pentru a evita orice coadă/mulțime inutilă de oameni. Așa că pe la 6 PM am ajuns acolo. Norocul face că Mugur să nimerească acel cod de la intrarea în cea mai bună parcare (cu barieră), unde de obicei beneficiază de acces doar cei cazați acolo sau eventual firmele care fac livrări pentru localurile din zona. Tare nu? Din parcarea respectivă ai două variante să ajungi în mănăstirea fortificată, cu bus-ul care circulă foarte des sau pe jos (cam 20 de min). Din parcarea mare, care este un pic mai departe de cetate se poate ajunge la fel cu bus-ul. Am ales varianta bus pentru că aveam nevoie urgent de o vizită la toaletă și pentru a ne adăposti de vânt care bătea din ce în ce mai tare. Că să înțelegeți, Marei i s-a uscat de tot buza de sus, ajungând să facă o semi rana din cauza vântului puternic din ziua respectivă. Yuchy!

EN: Before going on holiday, we were looking forward to Disneyland, Château du Bois Guy and Mont Saint-Michel. Our top 3 destinations as part of our full itinerary to say so. So one of the top attractions on our list was to be enjoyed soon. Yeyyy !!! I had checked with Mr.Google about the busy hours in Mont Saint-Michel just to avoid any unnecessary crowds so at 6 PM we got there. Lucky us, Mugur guessed the correct PIN used to enter one of the best parking spots (where access is normally granted only for those accommodated there, or, eventually, the companies who deliver goods for the premises in the area). Cool right? From the parking lot, you have two options to arrive at the fortified monastery, with the bus, which is running very often or by foot (about 20 minutes walk). From the large parking lot, which is a bit further from the fortress, the bus can serve you pretty well. We chose the bus option because we needed an urgent visit to the toilet and also wanted to take refuge from the wind that was blowing like it never did before. In order to visualize the hard blowing wind effects on us, just consider the fact that Mara’s lips were so dried up, that it started to look half-wounded. Yuchy!

Mont Saint-Michel este una dintre atracțiile principale ale Franței, ceea ce transformă locul în unul destul de comercial. Străduțele sunt superbe, priveliștile la fel, însă aglomerația lasă un pic de dorit. Nu vreau să știu cum este acolo la orele de vârf. Imaginea asta comercială este conturată de asemenea de zecile de magazine cu suveniruri kitch sau de localurile complet goale unde prețul unei omlete ajunge chiar și la 40 de EUR/porția. Omletele sunt într-adevăr speciale (din ce am auzit și am văzut acolo, dar nu am mâncat) iar rețeta este în continuare secretă. Localul poartă denumirea de La Mère Poulard și se află chiar la intrarea în cetatea ce înconjoară mănăstirea. Ca și concluzie, e un sat monument care arată minunat din depărtare și care îți oferă ocazia să vezi cel mai spectaculos fenomen de flux și reflux. Recunosc, fluxul pe care l-am prins a fost uber cool, viteză cu care se deplasează apă fiind într-adevăr ceva wow.

EN: Mont Saint-Michel is one of the main attractions in France, this being the reason why the place turned into a rather commercial area flooded with tourists. The strides are beautiful; the views are the same, but the crowds inside can be undesirable. I do not want to know how it is at peak times or during mid summer season. This too commercial image is also a result of dozens of kitsch souvenir shops or by completely empty premises where the price of an omelette even reaches 40 euros / portion. Omelettes are indeed special (from what we heard and saw there, but we did not taste) and the original recipe is still secret. The oldest place serving such omelettes place is called La Mère Poulard and is right at the entrance of the fortress surrounding the monastery. As a personal conclusion, Mont Saint-Michel is a monument village, which looks wonderful from afar and gives you the opportunity to see the most spectacular flux and reflux phenomenon. I must admit, the flux we saw was uber cool and the speed of the water moving beneath us created an unforgettable image for our memories.

A șasea zi/6th day

Vitré

A venit și momentul plecării din Château du Bois Guy așa că ne-am luat la revedere de la gazde și am promis că vom reveni. Destinația serii urmă să fie Nogent-le-Retrou, localitate aflată la o ora și jumătate de mers cu mașina până in Disneyland. Cum oricărui călător îi șade bine cu drumul, ne-am setat câteva opriri menite să ne bucure ochii și stomacul. Vitré, un oraș superb, ce adăpostește un alt castel formidabil (nu e nici o surpiza, nu?), la fel ca și Fougeres.

EN: It was about time to leave Château du Bois Guy so we said goodbye to the hosts and promised that we would come back. The final destination of the evening was Nogent-le-Retrou, an hour and a half drive to Disneyland. As any traveller loves being on the road, we set ourselves a list with a few stops before the final destination of the evening, meant to enjoy both our eyes and our stomach. Our first stop of the day – Vitré, a beautiful city that shelters another fantastic castle (there’s no surprise, right?), just like Fougeres.

Exploatat la minim și nedescoperit încă de ochii curioși ai turiștilor, orașul aduce un pic a Sighișoara noastră în zona centrală însă varianta un pic mai îngrijită. Acesta este unul dintre orașele din zona Bretaniei care și-a păstrat cel mai bine aspectul original fiind de altfel un exemplu fain al unui oraș vechi de 500 de ani. De menționat că Vitré este orașul înrudit cu al nostru Tălmaciu, România :).

EN: Exploited to the minimum now and not yet fully discovered by the curious eyes of the tourists, the central area of the city looks very similar with our Sighişoara but in a better shape though and much more good looking. This is one of the cities in Brittany area that has best preserved its original appearance and is also a great example of a city which turned 500-years. To be noted that Vitré is the sister city of our Tălmaciu town in Romania (near Sibiu):).

Mugur a plecat cu câteva “suveniruri” specifice, unele melodioase aș putea spune. Cred că puteți ghici ce duce el în cutia respectivă :P. Câteva sticle de vin și de cidru ce urma să le savurăm ulterior în camera de hotel din Disneyland.

EN: Mugur didn’t leave the city empty handed, carefully selecting some local “souvenirs” from a specialized shop located in the city center. I think you can guess what he’s carrying in that box :P. A few bottles of wine and cider that we would later enjoy in our Disneyland hotel room.

Laval

Pentru masa de prânz, am oprit in Laval, o alegere super inspirată. Localul numit Les Relais d’Alsace ne-a surprins în mod plăcut, atât din punctul de vedere al amenajării interioare dar și din cel al meniului foarte variat ce îți îngreuna bine de tot procesul de decizie. Porțiile gigant dar și gustoase ne-au rămas cumva întipărite în minte, la insistențele lui Mugur comândând chiar un La Majestueuse Île Flottante pentru desert.

EN: We stopped in Laval for lunch, a super inspired choice. The place called Les Relais d’Alsace has pleasantly surprised us, both in terms of interior design but also from the perspective of the products in the menu (international dishes) that definitely slowed down our decision making process before ordering something. We finally enjoyed a lot the giant but tasty portions including the star of the dessert menu: the Majestueuse Île Flottante.

Nogent-le-Rotrou

Am ajuns în Nogent-le-Rotrou undeva pe la 6 PM și ne-am cam speriat un pic după ce am văzut cât de liniștit e orașul. Oameni pe stradă nu, localurile închise…deja ne gândeam ce Dumnezeu o să facem noi acolo. Camera găsită pe Booking.com a fost chiar drăguță, aflată în imediată apropiere de Château Saint-Jean, singurul punct de interes din zona. La cină am savurat o clătită toți trei, nu din considerente de cost dar mancasem chiar foarte bine la prânz. Micul dejun de a două zi a fost surprinzător. Am primit Brioche franțuzesc (un fel de painica dulce) făcut chiar de soția proprietarului, croissant, cacao cu lapte și gemuri locale, spre bucuria noastră și a Marei, energizandu-ne de asemenea pentru continuarea calatoriei.

EN: We arrived in Nogent-le-Rotrou around 6pm on a Sunday and we kind of freaked out a bit after we saw how quiet the city is. No people on the street, majority of the restaurants and bars closed… We were already thinking about what on God’s Earth are we going to do to here. The room found on Booking.com was quite nice, located in the immediate vicinity of the Château Saint-Jean, the only point of interest in the area. At dinner we enjoyed a pancake – all three of us – not for cost considerations but we did have the full lunch on the road. The next day breakfast at the hotel was surprising. We received French Brioche (a kind of sweet bread) made by the owner’s wife, croissants, cocoa with milk and local jams, which of course brought us a lot of joy and energy to continue our journey.

A saptea zi/7th day

Chartres

Urmatoarea zi dis-de-dimineață am plecat către Disneyland, ultima noastră mini-ședere faină din Franța :). O ultima oprire pe drum am bifat-o în Chartres, oraș situat la 90 de km de Paris și faimos pentru catedrala impunătoare vizibilă de la mare depărtare de oraș. Catedrala este cunoscută nu numai pentru înălțimea ei ci și pentru faptul că adăpostește faimoasa să relicvă, Sancta Camisa, despre care se spune că este tunica purtată de Fecioara Maria la nașterea lui Hristos. Alt wow stuff ar fi că jocul Assassin’s Creed despre care cred că a auzit toată lumea, folosește Catedrala Chartres ca model pentru una din catedralele folosite in joc. Am vizitat construcția divină care este cu adevărat frumoasă cu ale sale vitralii colorate și parcă magice pe alocuri, și mai apoi am plecat către Disneyland. Direct acolo! Yupiiii!

EN: The next day in the morning we left towards Disneyland, our last nice mini-stay in France:). We made one last stop on the road in Chartres, a city located 90 km from Paris and famous for the imposing cathedral which is visible from far far away. The cathedral is known not only for its height but also for the fact that it houses its famous relic, Sancta Camisa, which is said to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary at the birth of Christ. Another wow stuff would be that the Assassin’s Creed game that I think everyone heard of, uses Chartres cathedral as a model for one of the constructions used in the game. We visited the divine and beautiful building with its colourful stained glass and somehow magical interiors, and then we got on our way to Disneyland. Right to it, with no additional stop! YUPIIII!
